In the 1990s, personal computers changed the way we talked. Suddenly, it was normal to “download” a file and “surf the web.” Words that were invented in some lab were suddenly being used by everyone.
The same pattern continued through the smartphone and social media era. Suddenly, you didn’t send a message. Instead, you DM’d someone.
Today, we’re witnessing another shift, this time driven by artificial intelligence. Millions of people read, edit, and publish AI-generated text every day. As a result, some of the language patterns common to large language models are beginning to appear more frequently in human writing. Words like “delve,” “nuanced,” and “robust,” have become recognizable markers of AI-assisted communication.
And how often have you seen the em dash lately — It looks like it’s Chippy’s favorite special character!
And, as with all new technologies, it’s also funny how people make mistakes at first. Like letting AI write a text and then forgetting to remove the metadata.
